What Mary has to say! – March 2019

January and February went by in a flash, helped by amazingly mild weather (and a lovely 4 day ski holiday with family and friends!). The horses did mainly roadwork through Jan, and introduced schooling and jumping towards the end of the month. I started their fast work early Feb, which I do every 3rd day, and went to Ferdi Eilberg for some dressage lessons. I have also had a couple of jumping lessons with Ros Morgan, who I found very helpful.

Bobby – Tweseldown

It was fab to start the season at Tweseldown where Bobby jumped a great double clear in the OI, having done a reasonable dressage test in a gale! I just took him quietly XC, and had planned to be more competitive the following weekend at Pontispool…but alas, heavy rain forced Pontispool to cancel, such a shame for everyone. So Bobbys next run is his first CCI-S 4* at Belton Horse Trials…can’t wait!

Tilly, my 5 yr old, should be ready to start eventing mid April. She has been lovely to work with, taking everything on board confidently. She is quite forward thinking, so have been gradually working on encouraging her to wait while working and jumping. She has a new half sponsor…Hannah Lord, hopefully she will make her proud!

With the extraordinarily dry weather it was great to be able to get my Logic roller working in Feb making the fields all smart. Mitsubishi generously replaced my long wheel based Shogun with a Shogun Sport – it is very spacious and drives beautifully. The Mitsubishi Motors Masterclass at the Unicorn Centre went smoothly, and I linked it in with a photoshoot for Blue Cross for whom I am their Equine Ambassador. A fun evening at River Cottage, where I was after dinner speaker, was well supported. The meal was delicious, and the following day the majority of the people came to my yard for a visit, and watched me jump Bobby.

The 2 brood mares are expanding fast. Tess is due in 4 weeks time, and Zara not until June. The youngstock have had a good winter, but its becoming quite an art not to lose my Ariat wellies when I feed and check them each morning! They are having Baileys Yearling cubes, and Marksway High Fibre HorseHage each day until the grass starts to come through.
