What Mary Has to Say! – March 2021

Hi everyone,

I hope you are keeping well. Here is an update:

Yippeee!…I’ve just done my first batch of entries for 2021 :). Even after the many years of competing, I still get a real buzz when the season is approaching. For me and my team of young horses there are plenty of events to aim for this spring, but for riders with the older more experienced horses the season is very sadly dwindling. It was such devastating news to hear of Badminton’s cancellation, then the news of the cancellation of Bramham Horse Trials, and today Chatsworth Horse Trials…so sad, such wonderful events dropping by the wayside.

This is my Spring Season Plan (very provisional as the BE Fixture list is changing all the time):

APRIL:

2nd    Tweseldown (Hants)

7th.    Portman (Dorset)

10th.  Larkhill (Wilts)

17th.  Bovington (Dorset)

23rd.  Bicton (Devon)

MAY

9th     Broadway (Worcs)

12/15 Aston Le Walls (Northants)

18/19 Howick (Monmouthshire)

22/24 Tweseldown (Hants)

27/30 Houghton CCI (Norfolk)

My horses are all well, and with Tweseldown only 3 weeks away they are getting pretty fit. I am so looking forward to March 29th when show and schooling centres are being allowed to open up. I’ve already booked a XC schooling slot at Pontispool early on the 29th! Although I try and vary the horses general work and dressage/jump schooling at home, the younger ones so benefit from traveling to different venues to work.

I sold Kings Rose a couple of weeks ago…very sad to sell another homebred, but she has gone to a lovely junior rider. Fingers crossed they have a huge amount of success together.

I have got a syndicate together for King Seamus…so for 2021 he will run under my name and The Kings Group. Huge thanks to Liz Knowler, Annie Jackett, Christine Allison and Gilly Robinson for becoming members.

Great news regarding having a new horse bedding sponsor – Burlybed. It is a West Country company that produces fabulous Miscanthus bedding which I am loving using, and also Oilseed Rape Straw bedding. It is double dust extracted and has no additives…and ultra absorbent!!

With the recent dry spell it was great to be able to roll some of my fields with my Logic roller…but sadly the rain came again before I had finished 🙁

I have done a few evening talks to Pony Clubs via Zoom, which has worked well, and hopefully helps motivate all those young budding event riders!

Best wishes

Mary
