What Mary Has to Say! – Sept 2019

The 2019 event season has come to an end for me and my horses. Tilly continued successfully through her autumn events jumping lovely double clears at her last 3 events. Although she qualified for the 5yr old National Champs, I decided that she had learnt plenty for a 5yr old this year, and I didn’t want to keep working her until October when the Championships happen. So she is happily out in the field with Bobby getting fat and hairy! I’m looking forward to 2020 with her.

Bobby had a couple of good runs leading up to his ‘big one’ which was Blenheim  CCI4*S for 8/9yo horses. What a treat for me to be competing at this wonderful event again (the last time was 9 yrs ago!) I had a very good XC schooling lesson with Chris Burton before which helped Bobby (and me!) to become much more forward thinking and positive (he is such a sweet calm kind horse by nature, but a bit too ‘behind my leg’ for tackling the bigger tracks!) We got off to a great start lying 3rd after the dressage. He felt very different to ride XC, much stronger and sharper which was great. We ended up having an annoying 20 pens 2/3rds of the way around, at one of the smallest fences on the course. I over-rode the final element of a combination, and should have waited for another stride like everyone else 🙄. Never mind …lots to look forward to next year with him.

Cyrus and Seamus (the 4yr olds) are progressing well. They are beginning to work in an outline, and now jump around a small course at trot with barrels, water trays, and fillers. I have finished backing Kizzy, my homebred 3 yr old (Tess x Cevin Z)…she is so sweet, and very intelligent.

Having finished competing this year it is giving me a chance to follow Emily at her events which is lovely…she has just come back from Ballindenisk in Ireland where she finished 3rd on Hobbie and 4th on Marco which she was thrilled with. I’m going to Osberton with her this week, then out to the lovely Le Lions D’Angers where her and Marco (Lord Patrick Beresford’s Vamonos) are one of only 3 combinations to be selected to ride in the 6 year old World Champs for GB!

It’s only 6 weeks until my Southern Ocean race. I am fundraising for 2 charities. Unicef and the Devon Air Ambulance. Please visit my Just Giving page (go online to Just Giving and search: Mary Kings Southern Ocean Race). I am trying to reach £1450 so any donations however big or small would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you everyone for your support this year.
