In recent years, Bucas has implemented various environmentally friendly protocols in our production processes. We ensure that all paper used for swing tags, guarantee certificates, flyers, and brochures is sustainably sourced or made from recycled materials. Moreover, the insulation in all Bucas rugs is crafted from recycled fibres. Despite these efforts, plastic pollution remains a significant global issue. With eight million tonnes of plastic entering our oceans annually and 300 million tonnes produced every year, the impact is staggering. Over 95% of plastic packaging is used only once, and many of us have been appalled by the images of vast islands of plastic waste in our oceans and on our beaches.

At Bucas, we are intensifying our efforts to reduce plastic waste by reclaiming it to produce our quality horse rugs. Introducing the Bucas Greenline Turnout Rug — an eco-friendly rug made almost entirely from recycled materials, such as plastic bottles. This initiative can be seen as upcycling, where plastic bottles are repurposed for a better use than their original, single-use purpose. Unlike a plastic bottle that may end up in a landfill or the ocean, a Bucas rug can be cherished and utilised for many years.

The process of creating a Greenline Turnout Rug involves using a considerable number of plastic bottles. For instance, a 145 cm rug with 300 g insulation incorporates approximately 99 plastic bottles, each weighing around 12 g. The recycled PET bottles are crushed, shredded, and spun into polyester yarn, which is then woven into durable fabric. Notably, producing recycled PET polyester uses significantly less energy and water, and emits fewer greenhouse gases compared to virgin polyester production.

Every aspect of the Greenline Turnout Rug, from the waterproof and breathable 600D ripstop outer fabric to the insulation, lining, straps, and binding, is made from recycled yarn. The rug includes all the features you expect from Bucas: the silky lining, shoulder darts for optimal fit and comfort, T-bar front closure with the signature magnetic Snap-lock, and attachment points for a matching neck. What sets it apart is the peace of mind knowing your rug is made responsibly and ecologically.

While not all components are recycled yet, Bucas is dedicated to creating a fully recycled rug.
