Seamus Hughes Kennedy- Behind the Stable Doors

We recently had the pleasure of visiting Seamus Hughes Kennedy, one of Ireland’s brightest young show jumping stars — and a proud Bucas rider!

Driving up Seamus’s driveway gave us an immediate sense of what was to come, a pristine entrance framed by manicured gardens and lush greenery led the way to his beautifully kept yard. With stable windows facing out, it wasn’t long before we caught a glimpse of his main man, Rocky. In that moment, we knew we’d landed in the right place and been welcomed to one of the most genuine, down-to-earth yards we’ve had the pleasure to visit.

Met with a smile and a firm handshake, the day kicked off.

Our conversations with Seamus gave us an insight into the rider behind the rosettes. Soft-spoken and humble, he talked us through his journey — how, despite show jumping not being his first love, it wasn’t long before the sport took his hand and led the way. His career has been nothing short of exceptional so far.

At just 21, Seamus already showcases some major achievements. In 2019, he claimed Gold at the FEI WBFSH Jumping World Breeding Championship with Cuffesgrange Cavadora, and in 2023, he dominated the FEI European Championships for Young Riders, winning both individual and team gold with ESI Rocky. He made his five-star debut at the Dublin Horse Show and capped off the year by winning the Under-25 Defender Grand Prix at CHI Geneva — all before most riders celebrate their 21st birthday!

But beyond the trophies and titles, what really stands out is the close-knit bond between Seamus and his family, something that comes through clearly in the video below.

We wrapped up the day meeting his homebred up-and-comers — a promising bunch of young horses with potential written all over them. And of course, we couldn’t leave without a moment with the yard’s most unexpected character: a rather boisterous Shetland pony who clearly thinks he’s in charge.

We left feeling impressed, and proud to have Seamus as part of the Bucas team.
